Today's Program: John McReynolds, Book Author

John McReynolds

John McReynolds is a sports writer for the Lompoc Record, and also the author of several books about our local Lompoc area.  Today, John discussed his book "Banished" which is about the internment of Japanese Americans during WWII.  He stated that he first became interested in the subject when reading books about the waves of immigrants who came to the Lompoc Valley.  He noticed that there was an obvious void of mention about Japanese Americans.  As a result, he undertook the effort to research and write about their presence in the area.  What he found out is that about 100 Japanese families came to and settled in the Lompoc area, but only about two returned after WWII.  Primarily, the reason was that they were not welcomed back into our community, which was common with rural areas at the time.  Therefore, the majority who had left migrated to larger metropolitan areas like San Francisco and Los Angeles.  Structured throughout the book area stories of how the Japanese Americans re-connected with their previous life before WWII.  The book has been well received by all Japanese groups.
